The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Max W. Getz (ASN: 39906868), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 823d Tank Destroyer Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 March 1945, in Germany. Noticing brush obstructing the view of the gunner in his squad, Private First Class Getz gallantly moved under intense enemy fire to remove it despite his knowing that he would draw enemy fire. While he was exposing himself he was seriously wounded. Private First Class Getz’s heroic action enabled his tank destroyer to fire on the enemy, routing them and breaking up the possibility of a counterattack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Getz, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
