The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Gay A. Garrett (ASNB: 37703170), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 34th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 April 1944, in the vicinity of Isola Bella, Italy. The patrol of which he was a member had successfully completed their mission of destroying an enemy strongpoint when it was observed that two of the enemy were attempting to attack the position of the patrol. As it was nearing daylight the patrol was ordered to withdraw, but Private Garrett and a comrade refused and on their own initiative chose to remain and cove the patrol. Although under heavy enemy machine gun and rifle fire they courageously held their ground and remained at their positions covering their comrades until the latter had successfully withdrawn. Their courage and coolness under fire was exemplary and worthy of the highest praise.
