    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William L. Gabner (ASN: 33493702), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 6th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at San Jose, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on ** January 1945. Private First Class Gabner, armed with a rocket launcher, volunteered to go forward of our liens to destroy an enemy pill box, the fire from which was impeding the advance of his infantry company. After crawling for seventy-five yards, he reached a point from which he fired sufficient rounds to destroy the pillbox and kill its occupants. Private First Class Gabner’s courageous act made it possible for his infantry company to continue its advance and successfully complete its mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Gabner, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
