The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James Farrell (ASN: 37015825), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 197th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 March 1945, in Germany. Corporal Farrell was accompanying his battery commander on a reconnaissance when a heavy concentration of artillery fire fell in the area. Hearing cries for help he immediately went to the aid of two wounded men. Corporal Farrell, despite the continuing fire, loaded the two men into a vehicle and evacuated them to an aid station. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Farrell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
