Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 77 (October 12, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Stanley Dettmer (ASN: 0-265252), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 823d Tank Destroyer Battalion, 30th Infantry Division during the period 7 July 1944 to 8 July 1944, in France. Colonel Dettmer was serving as the Commander of a Tank Destroyer Battalion engaged in offensive action against the enemy, which included a river crossing. While the river crossing was under way, heavy hostile artillery and small arms fire was being directed on the crossing troops. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Colonel Dettmer made the crossing with the leading elements of his battalion, personally directing operations. In the prolonged fire fight after the crossing, he remained with his forward troops, encouraging them when enemy fire became heavier, and personally selecting and supervising the establishment of his gun positions though constantly subjected to heavy enemy fire. The effective fires of the battalion materially aided in the overall success of the operation. The personal gallantry, and outstanding leadership exhibited by Colonel Dettmer reflect great credit on himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
