The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Richard Dennis (ASN: 11040184), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Armored Division, in action against the enemy on ** *******, 1943, in the vicinity of******, south of ******, Tunisia. Private Dennis was a member of a group assigned the mission of locating enemy guns which were delaying the advance of friendly infantry troops. The mission was successfully accomplished but while the group was withdrawing it was subjected to very heavy artillery fire. One of the vehicles received a direct hit severely wounding the personnel therein. He unhesitatingly dismounted from his tank and while under this heavy accurate fire, assisted in administering first aid treatment to the wounded and in evacuating them to the rear, where they could receive additional medical treatment. The gallantry and concern for the welfare of these wounded soldiers with complete disregard for his own displayed by Private Dennis reflect the finest traditions of the Armed Forces and are deserving o the highest praise.
