The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Clayton Carlile (ASN: 39173779), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 224 February 1945, in the vicinity of Niedwerau, Germany. When the carrying party of which Staff Sergeant Carlile was in charge was subjected to furious enemy fire after crossing the Roer River, numerous casualties were sustained and the party completely disorganized. Instilling his men with confidence, Staff Sergeant Carlile reorganized the group and directed the evacuation of wounded. His heroic action, devotion to duty, and complete disregard for his own safety saved the lives of many men and were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service.
