Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 158 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Hobart Carder (ASN: 35781995), United States Army, for gallantry in action serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 April 1945, in Germany. During an attack against enemy positions in a town, a friendly infantryman was wounded. Private Carder, ignoring heavy enemy rifle fire, gallantly ran to his wounded comrade and carried him to safety. Private Carder then set up his machine gun and shortly thereafter was subjected to a determined attack by fifteen of the enemy. Remaining unflinchingly at his position, Private Carder killed eight of the enemy with machine gun fire and grenades and compelled two others to surrender by point blank fire from a captured rocket launcher. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
