The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Billy V. Cade (ASN: 0-1106626), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 105th Engineer Combat Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 7 February 1945 to 10 February 1945, in Luxembourg. During the assault crossing of the Sauer River, First Lieutenant Cade worked incessantly under intense enemy artillery, mortar, machine gun, and small arms fire to transport troops across the river. He personally led the boat groups down to the river edge and remained their until the last boat left for the far shore. Although many casualties were suffered and he was grounded several times by concussion, First Lieutenant Cade courageously continued until his mission was completed. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by First Lieutenant Cade reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
