The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade James William Tillman Buntyn (ASN: 34580568), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 October 1944, in Germany. Although the route to be taken was under enemy observation and fire, Technician Fifth Grade Buntyn voluntarily made three trips carrying ammunition for two miles to a position near frontal troops. He then hand-carried the ammunition from this point to the guns. Observing that many casualties were suffered by the platoon, he voluntarily prepared shells and passed them to the gunner, thereby keeping the gun in order. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fifth Grade Buntyn, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
