The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Cavalry) Gardner W. Brown (ASN: 0-276919), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 6th Armored Division, in action against the enemy in *****, France, on 1 October 1944. When a company commander was seriously wounded, he rallied the company and led it toward the final objective. His tank was hit. After evacuating the crew, he again advanced until his tank was knocked out and caught fire. Again he evacuated the crew and dismounted, proceeded to another tank in order to continue in leading the company. He was wounded by a shell fragment but continued in his effort to get a tank and regain control of the company. Again he was wounded. His courage, determination, and aggressiveness were an inspiration to the men he rallied and led forward. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Brown, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
