Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 53 (September 12, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William H. Brewer (ASN: 0-1285889), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 July 1944 in France. When an enemy machine gun unit had infiltrated behind the lines of friendly troops Lieutenant Brewer unhesitatingly exposed himself to enemy fire in order to direct mortar fire on the enemy machine gun unit, which was firing from a concealed position. He directed mortar fire so capably that the enemy position was neutralized. Lieutenant Brewer was mortally wounded in the accomplishment of his mission. His actions reflect highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
