The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Eugene J. Schumacher (ASN: 36373950), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 8 and 9 November 1944. Private First Class Schumacher administered first aid to twenty-one casualties during a vicious enemy attack which disorganized his company. In spite of the heavy enemy artillery, mortar, and small arms fire, he alone treated and brought to cover six of the most seriously wounded patients, thereby undoubtedly saving their lives. Upon reporting to the Regimental Aid station for instructions, he discovered that it was cut off from the rear by enemy infiltration. Without hesitation, he voluntarily guided twelve walking wounded back to a loading point over a mile away, through territory subjected to continuous enemy artillery fire. Unmindful of the danger involved, he then volunteered to lead a convoy of four vehicles being organized to evacuate the wounded from the 1st and 3rd Battalions’ aid station, who were isolated by a strong enemy counterattack. He successfully guiding the group to the intended rendezvous through heavy artillery and small arms fire. Shortly after his mission had been completed he was mortally wounded by enemy small arms fire, while walking in front of the leading vehicle. By his gallantry, courage, and self-sacrificing devotion to duty , Private First Class Schumacher reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
