Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 69 (October 4, 1944), Revoked and Replaced by GO 75 (October 10, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Harold D. Adams (ASN: 20157345), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action on 8 July 1944, in France. Sergeant Adams was serving as a tank commander with a tank destroyer unit engaged in a vigorous action against a stubbornly resisting enemy. Enemy gunfire scored a direct hit on the tank in which he was riding, and the occupants were forced to abandon it. The enemy continued to shell the blazing tank, which endangered the lives of three wounded infantrymen lying nearby. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Sergeant Adams remained near his fallen comrades, adjusting their dressings and tourniquets until they could be evacuated. Later in the day, he again voluntarily exposed himself to heavy hostile fires in order to rescue two other wounded men who were unable to evacuate themselves. This magnificent display of courage and devotion to his wounded comrades, enabled Sergeant Adams to save the life of at least five soldiers, and served as an inspiration to his men. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Adams, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
