The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Clement J. Coss (ASN: 0-1310071), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 30 January 1945, in the vicinity of Jebsheim, France. With utter disregard for his personal safety, Captain Coss led his own and another company in a ferocious charge on enemy positions, in the face of intense enemy machine gun and rifle fire. The enemy spirit broke, numerous were killed and one hundred sixty-three surrendered. Captain Coss’ outstanding gallantry was an inspiration to the men he led and is in accord with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
