The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Bernard Frank (ASN: 35760777), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, on 8 February 1945, in the vicinity of Sarreguemince, France. Sergeant Frank was ordered to cross a river and pick up a patrol on the opposite shore. In route, he and three others were thrown in to the icy water when their assault boat capsized, at which time he suffered two broken ribs. Sergeant Frank, seeing that two men of his party went under the water struggling and apparently drowning, immediately swam out to them and rescued them safely to a log upon which he and another man had been clinging. In this outstanding and heroic act, Sergeant Frank was swept down the swift current of the river before he was able to struggle ashore. His heroic act is in keeping with the finest traditions of the United States Army.
