The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Kenneth F. Lumm (ASN: 32526641), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of Hottviller, France, on 11 January 1945. Although under heavy mortar and artillery fire, Sergeant Lumm went out and successfully repaired broken communication lines in a snow fall. While engaged in this task, he sighted three heavy German trucks, reported their location to our artillery and successfully adjusted the fire of our guns, resulting in the destruction of two of the enemy trucks. His observation Post received very heavy mortar fire but Sergeant Lumm remained until the mission was accomplished. His outstanding gallantry and determination to continue his self-assigned mission under fire reflect great credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
