The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Norman G. Reynolds (ASN: 0-339136), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 2d Battalion, 242d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 15 March 1945, near Bannstein, France. While attacking an enemy entrenched in well fortified positions, Colonel Reynolds exposed himself to intense artillery, mortar, and small arms fire. Personally leading his men over open terrain and across a stream, the first objective was taken against heavy odds. He then led the battalion in another attack upon a hill where the enemy also occupied prepared positions. After a fierce firefight, the objective was again taken with a minimum of losses. Colonel Reynolds’ courage and leadership throughout the entire attack resulted in the taking of two strategically important enemy positions, thus paving the way for the successful advance of the regiment.
