Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 24 (1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Benjamin F. Montague (ASN: 0-1301859), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 242d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 9 January 1945 at Hatten, France. Despite two fanatical enemy attacks on his Company’s position by infantry, supported by flame throwing tanks, artillery, and mortar fire, Captain Montague remained in position and directed his company’s defense against the enemy. When his position was in danger of being overrun, he organized the sixteen remaining men of his company and ordered them to proceed to Hatten, France, and set up new defensive positions. He then remained with the wounded men until subsequent capture by the enemy. As a result of Captain Montague’s gallant and courageous action, his men were inspired to greater efforts, enabling his Battalion to set up strong defensive positions around the town of Hatten.
