Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 19 (January 16, 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Technical Sergeant] Wallace A. Enge (ASN: 0-2006306), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Anti-Tank Company, 242d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 9 January 1945 at Hatten France. When enemy infiltrations of our lines threatened the three 57-mm. guns of his platoon, Sergeant Enge joined a group of riflemen to repulse the infiltrating forces. Although faced by intense enemy fire from a major assaulting force, he contacted nearby tank destroyers and brought them to his positions. When two enemy tanks broke through our defenses, he valiantly organized groups which successfully destroyed the tanks and the infantry accompanying them. Then, faced by an overwhelmingly superior force, he led the men safely out of the town. Sergeant Enge’s indomitable courage and outstanding leadership was instrumental in inflicting heavy losses on the enemy and eliminating two enemy tanks.
