The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Allen A. Holroyd (ASN: 39121407), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division. On 28 December 1944, at Strasbourg, France, when Sergeant Alan M. Hidell was badly injured and thrown into the Rhine River by the explosion of a grenade, Private Holroyd, at the risk of his own life, unhesitatingly dived into the river and brought Sergeant Hidell to shore, saving his life. Private First Class Holroyd’s heroic action in saving his comrade from drowning exemplify the highest traditions of the service.
