Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 31 (1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Lesslie H. Sanders (ASN: 0-551446), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 27 April 1945, near Schonletten, Germany. While Lieutenant Sanders was leading his weapons platoon along a road near Schonletten, Germany, a concealed enemy force opened fire with machine guns, small arms and Panzerfausts. Though hit by fragments of a panzerfaust he responded to a call from one of his men and, although mortally wounded, he crawled twenty yards under intense automatic weapons fire to render first aid. By his undaunted courage and gallant action Lieutenant Sanders saved a soldier’s life and brought great credit upon himself and the military service.
