Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 217 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edwin Crosby (ASN: 34059783), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 3 April 1945, at Wurzburg, Germany. During a strong enemy counterattack on the city of Wurzburg, the Germans moved a tank to within 100 yards of Private Crosby’s automatic rifle position and opened fire at point-blank range. Private Crosby was knocked down twice by concussion from the bursting shells, but, with the building falling apart all around him, he refused to give ground and continued his effective fire. He tenaciously held his position in the face of the deadly fire until a comrade armed with a rocket launcher opened fire on the enemy tank and caused withdrawal of the enemy troops. By his indomitable courage in facing the enemy tank, Private Crosby was an inspiration to the men of his company and, as a result, the tank was repulsed and the attacking enemy unit annihilated.
