The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Lloyd Travis (ASN: 34635650), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 15 March 1945, near Reipertsweiler, France. During the attack in the Hardt Mountains near Reipertsweiler, Sergeant Travis boldly led his heavy machine gun section out on the forward slope of the hill, in the face of intense enemy automatic weapons fire. The speed employed by Sergeant Travis in this maneuver took the enemy by surprise and neutralized the German Weapons on the opposite slope, allowing the rifle elements to break through the enemy line and continue their advance. This gallant act was directly responsible for the success of the mission.
