The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private George R. Hemingway (ASN: 10601934), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 15 March 1945 in the Hardt Mountains, France. During the action in the Hardt Mountains, Private Hemingway noticed two wounded men lying in the open exposed to enemy fire. Without hesitation, he crossed the open ground in spite of enemy sniper fire and reached the wounded men, bringing one of them back to cover. Returning for the second man he also brought him back to safety. Through his courageous act, Private Hemingway saved two fellow soldiers from possible death or capture.
