Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 129 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold W. Bushacher (ASN: 0-1312515), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 15 March 1945, at Lichtenberg, France. While moving forward to take command of a platoon that had been held up in an enemy minefield, Lieutenant Bushacher stepped on a mine. Despite a painful injury to his leg, he continued forward to reach the platoon and lead the attack, remaining with his men and refusing to be evacuated during the entire offensive through the Hardt Mountains and the Siegfried Line. His courageous leadership and unfailing devotion to duty were an inspiration to his men and were important factors in the successful accomplishments of his regiment.
