The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert L. Skaar (ASN: 36845252), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 10 March 1945, in France. When the patrol in which he was a rifleman was attacked by a strong enemy force, Private Skaar unhesitatingly opened fire to pin down the enemy. Although wounded by an enemy sniper, he continued the fight until a grenade exploded near him and he was again wounded. By his courageous action Private Skaar enabled his squad to withdraw to cover with a minimum of casualties.
