The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Robert R. Cassel (ASN: 16075583), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 10 April 1945 near Obbach, Germany. While laying a vital communication live, Corporal Cassel and his driver were seriously wounded by machine gun fire. Ordering one of the wire crew to go to the rear for help, he returned the enemy’s fire until loss of blood caused him to collapse. Though mortally wounded, Corporal Cassel’s extreme courage and determination saved the life of his comrade.
