The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Henry M. McCrone, Jr. (ASN: 44005265), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 8 April 1945, near Arnstein, Germany. When two platoons of his company were held up by intense machine gun and small arms fire, Private McCrone exposed himself to draw enemy fire. With utter disregard for his own safety, he advanced to another open position, from which he indicated the enemy’s well camouflaged positions to his platoon. Although mortally wounded, Private McCrone’s heroic and self-sacrificing action saved many lives and was a major factor in the successful drive by our forces against the city.
