Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 59 (March 4, 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Carl L. Miller (ASN: 0-389485), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 22 January 1945, near Leutenheim, France. When an overwhelming enemy force attacked his weapons platoon’s positions near Leutenheim, France, Lieutenant Miller, with utter disregard for his own safety, led a combat patrol in a counterattack against the Germans. By skillful deployment and fast aggressive action, he so bewildered and surprised the enemy force that they retreated in a disorganized state. Pursuing the fleeing Germans, he led his men in inflicting terrific casualties upon the retreating enemy. By his gallant leadership, Lieutenant Miller repulsed a determined attack against our thinly-held main line of resistance.
