Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 10 (January 16, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant John H. Zoller (ASN: RA-13096233), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Heavy Mortar Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 19 November 1950, near Pokhoc-Yong, Korea, Sergeant Zoller was a forward observer for a 4.2 inch mortar platoon on a combat patrol. While proceeding to the patrol objective an enemy outpost was spotted. Sergeant Zoller immediately went forward to the position of the lead scouts and adjusted fire on the enemy positions, flushing them from cover. Shortly thereafter the patrol came under intense enemy machine gun, and automatic rifle fire from the hills to their front. Sergeant Zoller fearlessly and unhesitatingly with utter disregard for his own personal safety, dashed through the intense enemy fire to a position from which he could locate the enemy positions. At this point he was seriously wounded but continued to adjust accurate and effective fire on the enemy until he was evacuated to safety. Sergeant Zoller’s initiative, courage and gallantry reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
