The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Edward Zglenski (ASN: 0-5347382/US-11858427), United States Army, for gallantry in action. First Lieutenant Zglenski distinguished himself by heroic actions on 30 November 1968, while serving as a platoon leader with Company C, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a reconnaissance in force operation, elements of Company C came in contact with a numerically superior enemy force. During the initial exchange of fire, several casualties were sustained, which included the fatal injury of one of the platoon leaders and the point squad leader. Immediately, Lieutenant Zglenski maneuvered his platoon into a position from which he could direct both of the platoons’ fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant Zglenski exposed himself to the hail of fire as he organized and personally led a carrying party to evacuate the wounded men. When the enemy force attempted to outflank his element, Lieutenant Zglenski shifted his unit in order to suppress the hostile attack. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the thwarting of the insurgent force. Lieutenant Zglenski’s bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
