The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Francis V. Young (ASN: RA-18254836), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 25th Reconnaissance Company, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. An attack by a vastly numerically superior enemy force during the early morning hours of 27 November 1950 near Ipsok, Korea, caused displacement of the friendly forces. Sergeant Young reorganized his squad after the initial banzai attack and, despite the continuing intense fire, led his men in a counterassault. By his calm, valorous and determined example, in the face of overwhelming odds, he inspired his men to such great effort that they secured the vital terrain and reestablished the company flank. Sergeant Young’s courageous and inspiring leadership, notable military skill and unremitting devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
