John York was appointed a second lieutenant, Aviation Section, Signal Reserve, on Nov. 27, 1917, and first lieutenant (temporary) Air Service, on Aug. 21, 1918. He was commissioned a first lieutenant, Air Service, in the Regular Army on July 1, 1920. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he retired in 1946 as a U.S. Army Air Forces Major General.
