The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] John S. York (ASN: 0-2212021), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 20 September 1950, a company attack on an enemy occupied hill in the vicinity of Chindong-ni, Korea, encountered stubborn resistance from well-entrenched hostile forces which directed withering machine gun and small arms fire on the attacking unit. Despite the concerted fire and a barrage of hand grenades, Lieutenant York led his platoon up a steep slope in three successive assaults, closed with the enemy and killed four himself in a hand-to-hand fight. His aggressive and courageous action so inspired his men that they completely overran the position and annihilated the foe. Lieutenant York’s exemplary bravery, outstanding leadership and selfless devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
