The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Frank E. Yester (ASN: US-52021826), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 2 June 1951, while occupying defensive positions on Hill 642, near Yonchon, Korea, Company I was fiercely attacked by hostile troops. Private Yester, a First Platoon squad leader, observing two wounded soldiers lying in an exposed forward location, unhesitatingly left his position of relative safety and raced across the open terrain, and, reaching the stricken men, took them to cover. Afterward, while rendering first aid to his comrades, Private Yester sustained leg wounds from an exploding enemy mortar round. Steadfastly refusing medical aid, however, he insisted that the other two wounded men receive the necessary medical medication and be evacuated before he would permit his own wounds to be treated. The selfless gallantry exhibited by Private Yester reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
