The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Robert L. Woods (ASN: 0-2033720), United States Army, for heroic achievement as a member of Battery A, 15th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action on 28 August 1951 in the vicinity of Tumil-li, Korea. On this date friendly units were pinned down by the enemy who had occupied commanding positions under the cover of darkness. Lieutenant Woods, realizing that friendly units were short of ammunition and faced with being overrun as their escape route was cut off, left his position of comparative safety to adjust the artillery fire. For several hours he remained in his position, completely exposed to enemy observation and fire, adjusting accurate artillery fire until the enemy was forced to withdraw. The outstanding devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Woods on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
