Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 39 (February 13, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Raymond P. White (ASN: RA-15256496), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 12 September 1950 in the vicinity of Poncho, Korea. On that date his company was attacking enemy positions. Shortly after the assault was launched, it was discovered that the previously selected route of withdrawal had been cut by infiltrating enemy machine gunners and riflemen, leaving the company exposed to attack from the rear. In order to secure the rear, while the company began a withdrawal, Corporal White deployed the squad over several hundred yards of enemy terrain. During the ensuing action his squad was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force and he was seriously wounded. In spite of his wound, he continued to direct the fire of his men, until it became apparent that his thinly-deployed squad would soon be overrun by the enemy. Ordering the squad to withdraw from its untenable position, he remained behind covering with withdrawal by automatic rifle fire. Intrepidly standing fast he displayed complete indifference for his personal safety, engaging the enemy with automatic fire until his squad had withdrawn to safety. While engaged in his courageous stand he was killed by hostile fire. The gallantry and selfless sacrifice of Corporal White reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
