Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 107 (1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry), [then Captain] James Wesley Weathers, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry (Infantry) Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy near Yonchon, Korea, on 22 September 1951. After his company had been forced to withdraw, despite the intense enemy fire, Major Weathers courageously remained at his forward position. After the men had reorganized, he recalled them to their original positions and led two squads in a continuation of the attack on the enemy, being the first to reach the hilltop. Major Weathers was wounded by an enemy grenade, but refused evacuation until assured that effective defensive positions had been established. His aggressive participation in this battle materially aided in the success of the attack and proved highly inspiring to his fellow soldiers. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Weathers, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
