    September 21, 1943

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Robert W. Watts, United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, at an Aleutian Air Base in Alaska, on 21 September 1943. Corporal Watts was one of a group of enlisted men who attempted to rescue the crew of a crashed airplane. After administering first aid to one man, these enlisted men fought their way through flames, smoke, and exploding ammunition and dragged two more men from the plane. They made a further attempt to remove a third man but were unsuccessful because of the intense heat. The courage displayed by Corporal Watts, with complete disregard for his own safety, reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
