The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) John S. Turner (ASN: 0-1688392), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 20 July 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date Captain Turner was in command of an Infantry Company which had the mission of securing and holding the commanding ground of Hill 266, commonly known as “Old Baldy”. As the friendly elements moved up the rugged slope, they were subjected to intense enemy fire, which halted their advance. After a second but unsuccessful charge, Captain Turner, with complete disregard for personal safety and while under direct enemy observation and fire, moved among the disrupted troops shouting words of encouragement and reorganizing them. Although seriously wounded in the leg from enemy shell fragments, Captain Turner refused to be evacuated until he had briefed his unit and the Company Executive Officer on the situation at hand. Captain Turner’s gallant actions reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
