Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 503 (November 3, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Ramon Torres-Marrero (ASN: ER-30425477), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 28 May 1951, near Taegaein-ni, Korea, Company A was marching in single file over a narrow log bridge crossing a turbulent, boulder-filled mountain stream. Due to recent heavy rains, the logs were wet and slippery, making the bridge highly dangerous; and, during the passing over, a heavily laden ammunition bearer lost his footing and fell into the water below. Buffeted about by the turbulent water and dashed against the rocks, the hapless soldier was in danger of being swept downstream, when Private Torres-Marrero plunged into the water to attempt a rescue. Fighting his way against the current, he reached his comrade, who was by this time unconscious, and, although beset by the swiftly rushing water, carried him to safety. Once on shore, Private Torres-Marrero immediately applied artificial respiration until the soldier revived. The heroic regard for the life of a fellow soldier exhibited by Private Torres-Marrero reflects high credit upon himself and the military service.
