The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Carl J. E. Sunde (ASN: 0-554325), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 May 1951 in the vicinity of Kunmul-gol, Korea. On that date a numerically superior enemy force overran friendly positions inflicting numerous casualties. The battalion was ordered to withdraw as effective artillery fire was placed on the enemy. When the artillery forward observer was wounded, Captain Sunde voluntarily returned to the forward command post, exposing himself to intense enemy fire, while calling for adjustments and directing accurate fire on the enemy. While doing so he was painfully wounded, but continued his action while friendly units withdrew. He then organized straggling troops and directed the evacuation of the wounded comrades. The gallantry and outstanding leadership demonstrated by Captain Sunde reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
