The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Medical Corps) Morris W. Stroud, III (ASN: 0-424802), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 164th Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 22 May 1944. While swimming in the surf, a soldier became exhausted and suffered a severe cramp. As he was being carried swiftly out to sea by a strong undertow, Captain Stroud, without hesitation or regard for his own life, swam to the struggling man and towed him to safety. Captain Stroud’s heroic action unquestionably saved the soldier’s life.
