The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Dale R. Stollberg (ASN: US-55028139), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 March 1951 in the vicinity of Yudong-ni, Korea. Private Stollberg’s platoon, leading an attack on an enemy-held ridge line, was pinned down by intense enemy machine gun and sub-machine gun fire from its flank. Realizing the danger of the platoon being annihilated, he moved forward voluntarily from his position and inched his way toward the enemy machine gun. When he was within approximately twenty yards of the position, Private Stollberg charged the position, throwing hand grenades and firing his rifle. Though he was seriously wounded he managed to throw a final hand grenade which destroyed the machine gun before he died of his wounds. The actions of Private Stollberg were a source of inspiration to his comrades. The gallant conduct and selfless attitude displayed by Private Stollberg reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
