Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 220 (June 20, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Martin H. Slutsky (ASN: US-51139957), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 8 April 1953 in the vicinity of Sang Mun An, North Korea. On that date, Sergeant Slutsky was serving as a machine gunner with an Infantry unit defending their positions from the assaults of a numerically superior hostile force. At approximately 2200 hours, the enemy launched a tremendous volume of artillery, mortar and small arms fire upon the friendly positions. Sergeant Slutsky, already observing enemy machine gun positions that were delivering accurate fire upon the friendly troops, carried his weapon to a vantage point from which to silence the hostile weapons. As the enemy pressed nearer with fanatical determination, and the intense hail of artillery and mortar rounds increased in his area, he refused to seek cover and remained with his weapon, laying down a devastating line of crippling fire upon the enemy emplacements until a direct round was scored upon his position, killing him instantly. Through Sergeant Slutsky’s unflinching courage and gallant self sacrifice, the casualties of the friendly forces were undoubtedly held to a minimum and their position were secure from further enemy attacks. Sergeant Slutsky’s indomitable fighting spirit and outstanding heroism on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
