Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 708 (November 12, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] Walter Schoonover (ASN: US-55122210), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandeau, Korea. On that date Company L was counterattacked by a numerically superior enemy force. Despite the intense hostile small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire, Private Schoonover remained in his position and provided covering fire while his comrades evacuated the wounded. He continued this action, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy until his unit had assumed better defensive position. Through his dauntless courage the lives of many of his comrades were saved and enabled friendly forces to maintain their positions. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Private Schoonover on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
