The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John G. Schneider (ASN: US-55024015), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date during an attack on well-fortified enemy positions, the platoon was pinned down by intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, grenades, and mortar fire. When enemy fire wounded the squad leader, Private Schneider assumed command and reorganized the squad. He then led the squad in an assault on an enemy machine gun emplacement, destroying it completely. He continued to advance, using marching fire and grenades, routing the enemy from their positions and inflicting numerous casualties upon them. Private Schneider’s heroic action forced the enemy to withdraw, enabling his platoon to advance and secure its objective. The gallantry in action demonstrated by Private Schneider reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
