The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Gus Theo Schneider (RA-18224714), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24-25 April 1951, near Taejon-ni, Korea, the second platoon, Company E, 2d Battalion, was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force and was compelled to withdraw to prepared defense positions. The defense position was formed by a series of ingeniously dug trenches and the advancing enemy had succeeded in getting into these trenches, again forcing part of the line to withdraw. Private Schneider unhesitatingly moved forward and placed himself in an exposed section of the trench where he could bring the enemy under fire. Using his rifle and bayonet, Private Schneider covered the withdrawal of his platoon from that section of the line and, in the ten minutes of action that followed, he killed seven enemy soldiers before he was finally forced to withdraw. Private Schneider’s gallantry and courageous devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
