Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 121 (May 6, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Carl John Schlitz, United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the morning of 11 November 1950 Lieutenant Schlitz led his platoon with the mission of reconnoitering and repairing the road between Yonghung, Korea, and a point forty miles to the west. In the vicinity of Insang-ni, while repairing a crater on a high treacherous mountain road, his platoon was attacked by an estimated thirty enemy. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Lieutenant Schlitz constantly exposed himself to heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire by moving from position to position to deploy and encourage his men and to coordinate their fire, resulting in the repulse of the enemy force. His heroic actions inspired his men so that the mission was successfully completed. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Schlitz reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
